At Waverley Mills, we know sleep is personal. So we asked our community to share a little more about their habits — from doona choices to seasonal swaps, pillow preferences to reasons for choosing a Waverley blanket.
Here’s what we discovered from our Sleep Survey — and how it confirms what we’ve always believed: natural fibres, layered comfort, and timeless quality make for better rest.
1. Natural Fibres Are Still the First Choice
Australian’s love wool — and for good reason, we grow the best wool in the world. There is a growing preference for sleeping under natural fibres. This reinforces our commitment to crafting from Australian-grown wool, valued for its breathability, warmth and comfort.
2. Blankets That Cross Generations
Our survey showed a strong trend in gifting — with Waverley blankets being purchased not just for personal use, but for loved ones of all ages. Respondents listed children, parents and partners as recipients, with notable activity in the 0–12, 29–44, and 45–60 age brackets. A Waverley blanket is more than a purchase — it’s a legacy gift.
3. Winter is All About Layering
Most people opt for layers in winter: flat sheet + doona + either a bed or throw blanket. Many even pair doonas with wool blankets or skip the doona altogether. This shows throws are a core part of how Australians build warmth — not just an afterthought.
4. Summer Calls for Natural, Lighter Options
In summer, the most popular combinations include flat sheets with light doonas, linen blankets, or wool-only layers. Wool’s breathability and moisture-wicking properties make it a smart year-round bedding choice.
5. Pillow Stacks Are Personal
From decorative cushions to European pillows, Australians layer with personality. Most people still start with standard pillows, but styling and structure matter — opening opportunities for mix-and-match throws and accessories.
6. Doonas: A Mystery to Many
While some respondents proudly sleep under down or wool-filled doonas, a surprising number weren’t sure what their doona was made from. There’s a clear opportunity to educate customers on the benefits of wool bedding — and to guide better sleep through better materials.
7. Seasonal Shifts Are Subtle
Not everyone swaps their doona with the seasons. Some stick to one weight year-round, while others don’t use a doona at all. This consistency highlights the comfort and flexibility of wool layers like throws and bed blankets.
The Takeaway? Australians are practical, comfort-focused, and increasingly conscious about what’s on their beds. They value quality, heritage and warmth — and wool continues to deliver on every level.
