Leighton House & Waverley Mills

Welcome to the limited edition 18-micron Smiths Lane wool blanket range in Forest and Eclipse, captured at the exquisite Leighton House in Evandale. Recently featured by Qantas in their Travel Insider section as one of Tasmania's cosiest winter stays, this collaboration showcases the best of Tasmanian craftsmanship and heritage.

Crafted in Tasmania for 150 years

For 150 years, Waverley Mills has been crafting Australia’s finest textiles at our historic weaving mill situated on the banks of Distillery Creek in Launceston. We are the last mill of our kind in Australia. Our blankets are unique, being woven and finished in Tasmania from Australian wool. We value craftsmanship, history, and quality. It was a natural choice to feature our limited edition premium blanket range at Leighton House with its rich history and delightfully considered renovation.

About Leighton House

Leighton House, a stunning example of early Victorian architecture dating back to 1860, holds a significant place in Tasmania's equine history. Renowned for breeding Clydesdale horses that contributed to Melbourne’s building boom in the 1870s-80s, it also boasts the notable achievement of siring Melbourne Cup winner Piping Lane, among other prized thoroughbreds.

Today, owners Hamish Campbell and Genevieve Taubman are committed to preserving Leighton House’s rich heritage. After a meticulous restoration of the original homestead and the addition of a modern, sustainably designed extension, Leighton House sets a new standard for luxury farm stays in Australia. The homestead retains its original floors, cornices, fireplaces, and windows, showcasing the symmetry of a Georgian house with the ornate flourishes of the Victorian era.

The new wing, designed by Core Collective of Hobart, seamlessly integrates with the original structure. It features locally-sourced, carbon-neutral bricks and steel-framed windows that highlight the picturesque surroundings. An internal courtyard, connected by a glass atrium walkway, unites the old with the new. The interiors, curated by Kirsten Bookallil of Stanwix Studios, are adorned with antiques and contemporary Australian art, creating an elegant yet inviting atmosphere.

Smiths Lane Forest and Eclipse at Leighton House

The lush green and smart navy blue of the Smiths Lane blankets paired beautifully with the timeless Leighton House aesthetic. Stylist Maddy Oliver and photographer Ness Vanderburg curated a classic feel, capturing Tasmania’s crisp winter light contrasting with Leighton’s cosy, inviting décor.

We hope you enjoy the imagery as much as we do. Thank you to Hamish and Genevieve for sharing Leighton House with us.

Why Choose Wool?

Wool is an exceptional natural fibre with numerous benefits, especially for sleeping. Here’s why you should consider incorporating wool into your life:

  • Regulates Temperature: Wool has natural insulating properties, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. This ensures a comfortable sleep year-round.
  • Moisture-Wicking: Wool can absorb significant amounts of moisture without feeling damp, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout the night.
  • Hypoallergenic: Wool is resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, making it a great choice for those with allergies.
  • Eco-Friendly: Wool is a sustainable, biodegradable, and renewable resource, making it an environmentally conscious choice.
